If you have already installed VirtualBox onto your computer you will have noticed that it prompts you with error messages when attempting to attach USB devices such as an external USB WiFi adapter. VirtualBox requires you to download and install the extension pack that adds support for USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 devices, VirtualBox RDP, disk encryption, NVMe and PXE boot for Intel cards. We will show you how to install VirtualBox extension pack.
If you haven’t already installed VirtualBox then you should see our tutorial on how to build a hacking lab with VirtualBox. If you already have it installed then you will need to download the extension pack. You can download the extension pack from the VirtualBox website. Navigate to the downloads section and located the VirtualBox Extension Pack and click the link labelled “All supported platforms”.
HOW TO INSTALL VIRTUALBOX EXTENSION PACK AFTER IT IS DOWNLOADED
When the file is downloaded to your computer you need to open the VirtualBox program. You will need to run VirtualBox as administrator though because installing the extension pack requires administrative rights. If you have the VirtualBox icon on your desktop then right-click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
When VirtualBox is open you need to navigate to File >> Preferences. When the “Preferences” dialog box opens you need to click on the “Extensions” tab.
When the Extensions tab is active you need to click on the small icon on the right side of the window that looks like a triangle inside of a square. When you click on the icon you will need to navigate to the location of the file that you downloaded. When you locate the file click on it and then click the “Open” button.
A windows will pop up that asks if you want to install the extension pack. Click the “Install” button to install the VirtualBox extension pack.
